An outbreak of the avian influenza virus, H5N1, which is deadly to birds, was confirmed in a massive poultry plant near Lowestoft, Suffolk. Government vets ordered the slaughter of all birds. About 160,000 were gassed, then transported across the country in sealed lorries for incineration. What was young people's reaction? Is it the response they expected?

Many shoppers in France, Italy and Germany stopped buying poultry products after similar bird flu outbreaks last year.Will British consumers do the same? Or will they accept the advice of the Government that there is no serious risk to health from eating poultry or eggs?
