Social problems from gun crime to a lack of respect are being blamed on absent fathers. Kick-start a discussion on dads who duck out of their children's lives.

Do young people think crime is linked to absent fathers? If more dads were around, would fewer young people commit offences? Are some fathers a bad influence?

Conservative Party leader David Cameron has said that absent fathers should be made to feel as "socially unacceptable" as drink-drivers. Is this a good comparison?

Some teenage parents are single mothers who do not want contact with their child's father. What problems might they face if dads are pressured to be around? Education Secretary Alan Johnson has proposed dads-only parents' evenings, so fathers can support their child's education without risking a public row with their ex-partner. Would young people back that?

The Conservative Party stresses that young people need to grow up with a "strong male influence in their lives". Do young people agree? Does it have to be a father? Could other role models such as youth workers perform a similar job?
