Many British Muslims feel unsettled and even fearful, says Iqbal Sacranie, secretary- general of the Muslim Council of Britain, which published the pocket guide (see Just out, below). Other prominent Muslims agree, talking about "times of peril".
In what way have things changed for Muslims in Britain? Why? What views do young people have, from their own experience or media reports, about the tensions among different communities?
A large section of the guide is devoted to stop and search, and rights on arrest. Talk about why this is important. Searches of Asian people have risen disproportionately in recent years. Under the Terrorism Act 2000 the police do not need to have reasonable grounds to justify a stop and search. Someone arrested under the Act may have their right to consult a solicitor delayed by up to 48 hours. Discuss the problems this causes.
