It is something that comes naturally to effective workers but, nevertheless, a book that explains the process, offers tips and exercises and has the potential to enhance our work does demand our attention.

The most important part of any paper, document or book that seeks to address issues of self-esteem is to understand what definition is being used. In this case Deborah Plummer writes of self-esteem as the foundation for emotional, physical and social wellbeing and defines it as "the value we place on ourselves and our abilities".

Unfortunately, this is at odds, at least in part, with the way in which many youth workers, for example, would see true self-esteem.
