Resources: Review - Exploration of need and interventions

1 min read
This book successfully achieves its aim of exploring the current evidence of need, and the effectiveness of particular interventions to improve outcomes for children and families. I found it to be ambitious, timely and stimulating. The messages are not new or surprising, but they are given a new dimension and credibility by being grounded in current research within an international context.

Different writers address theory, practice and the monitoring andevaluation processes in delivering family support. The first sectionidentifies different measures of "need" and the impact of governmentpolicies. Next, it explores the effectiveness of specific interventionswhile the final section addresses monitoring and evaluation ofoutcomes.

The presentations on each of these areas I found to be very informative, even a little inspiring. The comparison between, for example, US andBritish government policy and practice, helped me look at familiarissues with new energy and enthusiasm.

There is something for everyone involved in family support. Inchildren's services, where we need all the help we can get to understandone another's perspectives and practices, this book is very welcome.
