Resources: Review - Bring children in from the margins

1 min read
Much of the policy documentation and debate surrounding inclusion focuses on placing all children in a mainstream school. This narrow interpretation implies that more placements in the mainstream bring about inclusion and reduce the possibility of children and young people being segregated and marginalised.

But this book argues that just being in a group wherever it is placed doesn't make you included. To feel included your voice needs to be heard; you have to be listened to.

Different authors over 11 chapters raise questions they have engaged with in their professional practice when attempting to hear the voices of children and young people with a range of additional educational needs including those within SEN.

Drawing upon case studies, professional experience and projects that set out to highlight pupils' perspectives, the book argues that to bring pupils in from the margins their voice has to be acted upon. In doing so, they discuss the extent to which children and young people can make decisions on aspects of their own lives.
