Ray and company dream of becoming hip-hop heroes and after referral to a music-based social exclusion project, they land a record deal. If only careers went this way - from school exclusion to number one single less than halfway in. It appears things don't always run completely to plan though. Rivalry develops with a west London rap act, which step by step leads to violence and, as is the way in the music "industry", increased publicity and sales for all.

As the book progresses, it becomes clear that the young protagonists are being manipulated by the men in suits, and this at least reflects reality. Conflict is resolved into unity, and the young people win the day. The Brothers Grimm would have been proud.
