The title may be an ironic allusion to Peter's Friends, the film about a privileged Oxbridge set with dark secrets. But there are no secrets in this collection of photographs and text laying bare the lives of drug and alcohol abusers in the tough, troubled ex-mining villages of County Durham.

The project was funded through the county's drug and alcohol action team, and the Gary of the title is a former drug dealer and armed robber who provided photographer Adrian Clarke with an entry to a network of people whose life courses have been defined by substance abuse.
