Thirst for Life by Hope UK is an approach and a resource that is worth supporting, not simply because it presents a compact package of facts, exercises, advertising materials and a web site (www.thirstforlife.org), but also because it seizes the time and opportunity - in this case the Christian fasting period of Lent - to connect faith with culture and produce something educationally and socially worthwhile.
I'm not a Christian, but the explicit - though not overwhelming - faith context should not deter generic youth workers from adapting and localising the approach. For fasting, read "detox"; instead of using Biblical quotations to aid discussions, use the helpful information sources provided to garner a wide range of facts, opinions and historical incidents from agencies such as Alcohol Concern and Drinkline.
