The Thirst for Life project, which launches at the end of this month, is run by evangelical organisation Share Jesus International and Hope UK, a Christian drugs education charity. It is also calling on youth workers to facilitate discussions with young people on the use of alcohol.
Emma Morrice, project manager at Thirst for Life, said: "The initiative coincides with Lent, but is aimed at everyone."
The call to abstinence will be promoted in Odeon cinemas, Slug and Lettuce bars, coffee and bookshops and health clubs.
