Barely a day passes without some politician or pressure group advocating the incorporation of a new "issue" into the national curriculum. Underlying these demands is an assumption that if we want a society that will be crime free, safe, caring, awash with volunteers and so on ad nauseam then teachers and youth workers need to grab people while they are young.

These ideas are often voiced by those who believe young people have lost the ability to differentiate between right and wrong and that they are growing up in a moral vacuum. They hold that the loss of religious faith and the undermining of authority figures by liberals and lefties has fostered moral relativism.
