Jeffs and Smith give us the theory and practice behind informal education and help us to continue our education with guides for further reading and questions about practice. The book is a guide that no student of youth and community work can afford to be without.

As a teacher of youth and community workers, I was struck by the importance that Smith and Jeffs give to the education of informal educators themselves.

They feel it is not enough to know a few techniques, but a good informal educator must be a well-educated person who can make links and help people to expand their own knowledge. Even within this slim text, Jeffs and Smith are busy doing that, using figures from Greek mythology and classic writers of English literature to make their points.
