What do you do to get the show back on the road? How can you keep the project pulling together? Rebuild with the quick guide.
1. Expect a lot of emotion after a break-in. Young people feel very attached to their building - it's their space, after all. To find it damaged can be distressing, not just a practical and expensive nuisance. Encourage young people to share their thoughts. It is natural to be angry when you've lost something you value. Invite young people to talk about their shock, and get to know what they really thought of their facility.
2. Don't deny young people the chance to express their sadness, but do make it clear that the loss is going to be temporary. Challenge defeatist talk about never getting it back as it was. Show determination to restore it as quickly as possible. Reflect on what young people liked and didn't like about the previous setup. The clear-up might be a chance to improve things. Consider a volunteer decorating day to bring people together positively.
