Resources: Quick guide to ... sexually transmitted infections

2 mins read

Yet infection rates are increasing among young people. This week is Sexual Health Week; help them protect themselves with the quick guide.

1. "Don't die of ignorance" was the slogan of a much criticised and alarmist Aids campaign from the 1980s. Despite its faults, it did bring safer sex into general discussion. There are fears now that the lack of similar high-profile campaigns means safer sex is not on young people's radar screens.

2. It is not easy to talk about sexually transmitted infections, or STIs. That's often literally true. Not everyone is sure how to pronounce "chlamydia". And many adults are coy about saying words such as genital wart out loud. But it is important to avoid euphemisms, so practise the real words. Eventually, you will get used to it. If you really can't talk to young people about intimate matters, find someone who can.
