1. Be actively vigilant. The security service, also known as MI5, is responsible for protecting the UK against threats to national security. But its director general freely admits that it relies heavily on the help and support of the public. The bombs in London were foiled, not by the security forces directly, but by warnings from alert observers who had seen something suspicious. Young people are often observant, and go to places adults don't. Anyone with information about an imminent threat to life or property can dial 999 for the police or the Anti-Terrorist Hotline on 0800 789 321. Less urgent information can be emailed to MI5 from its web site - www.mi5.gov.uk.
