1. Travel is educational, or can be. But the learning should begin long before the trip starts. Finding out about a country before you set out means you will get more out of the experience. So will those in the countries you visit. Young people are often unprepared. "No-one's teaching them," says Michael Lomotey, outreach officer for Tourism Concern.

2. Modest dressing can be an important part of respecting other people's culture. The trouble is that hot weather can encourage young people in the opposite direction. Something similar applies to drugs and alcohol. Behaviour that is tolerated in the UK can be illegal or offensive elsewhere.
