RESOURCES: Quick guide to... packing a minibus safely

2 mins read

1 It is easier to overload a minibus than you might think. That means poor road-handling and increased braking distances, as well as the risk of a fine and points.

Just because you have a certain number of seats doesn't mean you can fill them with people and their luggage. A minibus with a permissible maximum weight (or maximum authorised mass) of 3,500kg might weigh around 2,260kg with fuel and nothing else.

That allows 1,240kg for people and luggage. If your 16 passengers weigh an average of 75kg, making 1200kg, you've got a slimline 40kg for luggage.

You'll be overloaded before you've begun to think about the duty-free booze. If you are not sure of your vehicle's kerb weight, fill it with fuel and take it to a weighbridge. And make a note of it.
