1. File sharing means the trading of digital files from one computer to another over the internet. You download from someone else and you upload to enable someone else to have what you have. The most widely traded files are music and film, and are usually in violation of copyright.
2. To share files you need file-sharing software, which is often available free on the internet and links you up with other users - that's why the technology is often called peer to peer or p2p. Napster is probably still the most famous file-share programme, but this was vulnerable to legal action because it used central servers to link up peers. Napster has now relaunched as a legal site.
