Global sales of recorded music have fallen in each of the past four years. The industry says that one reason is the illegal distribution of songs and CD tracks using the internet. Thanks to fast connections and file-sharing software, digital files of music are being swapped between individuals all around the world. Files can then be burned onto a blank CD and played anywhere. It is free and it is illegal.

The music industry is now hitting back. It defeated Napster, which was one of the earliest pioneers of music sharing, and it has already forced one internet company to hand over details of customers who swapped files.
