Goals: To use opera to develop young people and expand their horizons
Funding: 45,000, including 17,300 from the Arts Council West Midlands and the rest from other sources
Some people might think opera has limited appeal to teenagers. But since last April, young people in northern England have been discovering that opera is more than just singing fat ladies.
The Youth Operatunity project was born out of a partnership between world-famous opera company Glyndebourne Productions, three theatres and Make Some Noise (the Youth Music Action Zone for Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent).
About 55 young people aged 11 to 18 have been taking part once a week after school at the Lichfield Garrick Theatre in Lichfield, the Victoria Hall and Regent Theatre in Stoke-on-Trent, and the New Vic Theatre in Newcastle-under-Lyme.
