Goals: To encourage young people to volunteer as sexual health peer educators for their schools
Funding: Sheffield Primary Care Trust has funded the co-ordinator's post
Delivering sexual health education to a class of giggling pre-teens can be a daunting challenge. But when teenagers from Sheffield tried, they found being frank and honest went a long way.
The Step Together project was set up by the Centre for HIV and Sexual Health and Sheffield Primary Care Trust at two sixth-form schools with the aim of engaging young people to become sexual health peer educators.
A group of 24 young people in Years 7 and 8 from High Storrs and Silverdale secondary schools attended a 10-week training course and have since been delivering sex education to Year 6 pupils in primary schools and Year 7 in their own schools.
