Goals: To give young people a platform to express themselves and engage in a dialogue with their peers
Funding: The project has been funded from the youth service budget
Leeds youth worker Tafazal Mohammad has drawn inspiration from London's Speakers' Corner for his latest project. He has devised a youth work session based on the famous debating point where young people take to a platform and voice their opinions on what they see as right or wrong in the world today. Debates allow young people to understand opposing points of view, and practise their own oratory.
"Speakers' Corner is a tool for youth groups to enable young people to speak freely," he says. "Young people are affected by lack of expression. When they can't express themselves effectively they internalise problems. This is about creating an environment for young people to express themselves and empowering them by the process of dialogue at the same time."
