Resources: Know how - Cultural awareness

1 min read
Valuing difference and welcoming children from all backgrounds is important for all staff from early years and beyond. But emphasising cultural awareness needs a certain amount of caution in order to have the proper effect, as PJ White explains. 1. Being sensitive to children's cultural backgrounds can be positive. But approached crudely and unthinkingly, it may cause more harm than good. Patrice Lawrence, Black and minority ethnic children and young people co-ordinator at the National Children's Bureau, advocates caution about some effects of cultural awareness messages. She points out that, at its worst, a mechanistic approach can actually lead to a failure to listen to and even protect children. "That's how they do things in that culture" can become a sort of complicity in neglect, masquerading as sensitivity.

2. It is vital to concentrate on responding to children as people in their own right. All children are individuals, and therefore different, and all families have different cultures. Race and faith are just single factors feeding into a complex mix. Active listening and taking children's concerns seriously are far more important than a crash course in other people's faiths, races and backgrounds.

3. Even so, there are some basics that everyone should be aware of. Language is a powerful tool for learning, both positive and negative. It is not political correctness gone mad to respect other people's feelings and to avoid giving offence by insensitive use of words. If workers show that they are not sure what is offensive, that can be a good time to run sessions and encourage conversations on inclusive language.
