2. It is vital to concentrate on responding to children as people in their own right. All children are individuals, and therefore different, and all families have different cultures. Race and faith are just single factors feeding into a complex mix. Active listening and taking children's concerns seriously are far more important than a crash course in other people's faiths, races and backgrounds.
3. Even so, there are some basics that everyone should be aware of. Language is a powerful tool for learning, both positive and negative. It is not political correctness gone mad to respect other people's feelings and to avoid giving offence by insensitive use of words. If workers show that they are not sure what is offensive, that can be a good time to run sessions and encourage conversations on inclusive language.
