How much is available? About 5m each year. This amounts to about 19,000 this year for a small council such as the Shetlands, up to 1m in Glasgow.
The programme is being administered by local authority Community Safety Partnerships, so arrangements will differ locally. In Glasgow, for example, about half the money was allocated by Community Safety Partnerships to areas where it was felt it was most needed, and half in two grant streams, one for up to 1,000, one up for up to 20,000.
How has this year's money been used? In the Shetlands, the money was used to support projects including sports activities during the long winter nights at Tingwall Youth Club; a skatepark in Lerwick; a camcorder to help train of young gymnasts in the Shetland trampoline squad; a project co-ordinator for a befriending project; and DJ equipment for the young people of Unst Youth Club.
