The contributions in Youth Work are from practitioners, and Jeffs and Smith, while bemoaning the lack of theoretical writing in youth and community work, stress that the intention of the volume is to develop the practical side of youth work.
I was given this book as a leaving present in 1987. I was going to work for the "socialist borough of Ealing" and so immediately turned to Tony Taylor's chapter on "Youth Workers as Socialists". I found it an inspiring argument and one that Taylor is still making: see his contribution to the Transforming Youth Work debate on the web site www.infed.org.
