Since the publication of this book, churches have taken youth work very seriously and statistics show that more than half of full-time youth workers are now employed by churches or Christian organisations. This increase has led in some situations to an unhelpful polarisation between Christian youth work and what author Mark Ashton calls "secular" youth work. The roots of this polarisation can be found at the heart of the book: "Christ does not teach us to support the personal development of young people so that they can reach their full potential. We are invited instead to call them to repentance and faith, because only in this way can they begin to realise their full potential."
