Alex, an intelligent 11-year-old with behavioural problems, has a problem with authority and is grimly labelled a troublemaker by the care and youth justice systems after being abandoned and later orphaned by a father unable to cope with his son's unexplainable rages. The book demonstrates the historical lack of understanding of young people by authorities, made up of either well-meaning social workers bogged down with bureaucracy on the outside, or authoritarian, sadistic or corrupt individuals on the inside who beat up children as they would an opponent in the boxing ring. Despite his spirit, Alex does not appear to stand a chance of surviving the system.
