Much of Burgess's novel has fortunately turned out not to be prophetic, although to read the tabloid portrayal of young people you might believe it to be the case. However, there are echoes of the present in A Clockwork Orange. In the novel, the prison system is grossly overcrowded and prisoners are sharing cells. Today, England and Wales has its highest prison population ever, and we lock up more people than any other country in western Europe.
