Shame, looking back, that we had to come in from the margins, only to be better controlled "in the mainstream". Still, we were still sufficiently creative to seize the front page of what was to be the last Working With Girls newsletter: "The grass roots are bloomin' wonderful," it sang out.
It's hard to re-read this book as a text from a time when "some women youth workers turned to feminism; some feminists turned to youth work, and together they created the movement we recognise as Girls' Work". It is poignant to read the last chapters, "Working in partnership", "Securing our work" and "Coming in from the margins", with knowledge of the unit's disbanding and erasure of the transformative power of our movement.
