Since the closure in the mid-1990s of the National Girls' Work Unit and numerous other local units across the country, many feminist youth workers have felt that progressive work with girls and young women has fallen off the agenda. Feminist Webs wants to put it back on.
For the past three years the collective has been working on a number of projects, including developing many resources that are available online at www.feministwebs.com and a paper resource: Done Hair and Nails, Now What?
Since 2008, the group has been working on a Heritage Lottery - Young Roots - funded project to develop an archive of work with girls and young women based at Manchester Metropolitan University, which will also be available through the website. Young women from across the North West have been trained in how to gather oral histories, and have interviewed older feminist youth workers from across the region. These oral histories are available online, at the Manchester archive and through the North West Regional Sound Archive. The project has also been selected by The National Youth Agency as one of its intergenerational pilot projects.
