SUMMARY

Dr Jools Page and a team of researchers from the University of Sheffield's School of Education wanted to analyse the impact on childcare providers of a rise in media coverage of sex abuse scandals. The team set out to examine how practitioners in early years settings express the affectionate and caring behaviours young children need to develop healthy attachments.

The team devised an online survey, which was completed by 793 early years practitioners. The findings were used to inform 10 face-to-face interviews with early years practitioners and four focus groups with 26 participants drawn from Fennies, a privately-owned group of nurseries based in south London and Surrey.
