5 mins read
A new qualification for the childcare sector aims to give workers the recognition they feel has been missing for such a skilled job. Jo Stephenson reports on how students have been tackling the trial phase.

In autumn 2006 a bunch of early years workers boldly went where no onehad gone before. They were the first to aim for Early Years ProfessionalStatus (EYPS), a new qualification at the cutting edge of workforcereform.

EYPS was developed to a tight timetable by the Children's WorkforceDevelopment Council (CWDC), and it's about recognising that childcare isa skilled job. Currently only graduate-level candidates can apply, andthere are four different qualification routes, including a year-longfull-time course for those with relevant degrees but little experienceof working with under-fives. However, all candidates, irrespective ofbackground, must prove they meet 39 standards ranging from childprotection to communicating with parents.
