
When a broadcaster asked if we would do a survey into the impacts of coronavirus on the disadvantage gap, we were grateful for the opportunity to remind the public and policymakers that the early years is the time when investment in quality education has the biggest impact on children’s attainment – especially for children from disadvantaged backgrounds.
It has been a disappointing few years for the fight against inequality. According to the Education Policy Institute, even before the pandemic struck the disadvantage gap, which had been closing, had once again begun to widen. It is no wonder the early years sector is concerned about attainment levels for children from disadvantaged backgrounds.
