SUMMARY

A team of researchers led by Dr Matthew Hodes at Imperial College London's Department of Medicine set out to compare the length of time adolescents and adults are left untreated after the onset of psychotic symptoms. The team also wanted to explore whether differences in social and economic background had an effect on how long adolescents had to wait for treatment.

The researchers analysed data on 136 14- to 17-year-olds and 804 18- to 35-year-olds who had been referred to nine Early Intervention in Psychosis services in London between 2003 and 2009. All had presented to mental health services for the first time in the last year with more than a week of psychotic symptoms.
