Quick guide to ... Psychosis

1 min read Health
Psychosis is a mental condition where somebody is unable to distinguish between reality and their imagination. It can affect people of any age with sufferers experiencing hallucinations and delusions

- Last week a study published in the British Journal of Psychiatry found that people who smoke the potent skunk form of cannabis are more at risk of psychotic illnesses such as schizophrenia. The study claims that regular cannabis users double their risk of psychosis but heavy skunk users increase theirs seven-fold

- Prompt treatment is recommended for psychosis because studies suggest that the earlier the condition is treated, the better the long-term results tend to be. In the short-term, medicines are used to make sure that the person is no longer a danger to themselves or others. The long-term treatment generally involves using a combination of antipsychotic medicines and psychological therapies
