Regeneration: Groundwork to encourage voice of local youth

1 min read
Environmental regeneration charity Groundwork is setting up a network of projects across England to allow about 1,200 young people to have a say on the state of their communities.

The Young People Friendly Neighbourhoods scheme will consist of 18 separate projects run by Groundwork trusts, with at least one in each region. Although details are still being worked out, the aim is to give young people a platform to further express their views.

The three-year scheme will cost £1.1m, and is funded by a £1m grant from the Big Lottery Fund's Young People's Fund and money from Groundwork.

The projects will not include work to change neighbourhoods, but Steve Webster, youth development co-ordinator at Groundwork, said: "It is about young people deciding what they like and don't like about where they live and empowering them to go to their council, and say 'this is what we want'."
