Recruitment and Retention in Social Care: Policy context

10 mins read Social Care
Like many local authorities, Bournemouth Borough Council has set up a dedicated website to "sell" the benefits of living and working in the south coast town to social workers.

The site has videos of staff talking about what it is like to work there. Sue Ross, the council's director of children's and adults services, says there was debate whether to include images of the picturesque seaside town as a backdrop to their videos. Eventually these were included because staff expressed "strong views" that it helped show it is a good place to live.

The Bournemouth approach illustrates how councils are thinking creatively to attract potential children's social workers, such is the competition for their services. "It's a really competitive market," says Ross. "My social workers can go online and easily find another job."
