Bullying is defined in this instance as incidents of physical or verbal abuse, including internet abuse, which causes harm or distress to pupils. The requirement also includes the recording of racist incidents and verbal and physical abuse against school staff.
The aim of recording these episodes is to enable schools and PRUs to deal with bullying quickly and effectively while keeping pupils safe. It will also help schools to review their anti-bullying policies and strategies, and means parents can be kept better informed on how specific occurrences of bullying are dealt with. Producing clear records of incidents will also form part of schools' statutory obligations to safeguard all pupils who may be targeted by bullies because of their gender, gender identity, race, religion, sexual orientation or any special educational needs or disability.
