Consultation launched on schools' duty to report bullying

1 min read Education
The government is consulting on imposing a duty on schools to record and report instances of bullying to their local authorities.

The duty, which was first announced in September 2008, will cover serious or recurring incidents of bullying and racism between pupils, and abuse or bullying of school staff. The consultation will run from today for 12 weeks, and the duty will come into force in September 2010.

The duty to record racist incidents of bullying was one of the recommendations in the Macpherson report into the Stephen Lawrence case.

Schools minister Vernon Coaker said: "The majority of schools already record incidents of bullying. However, I want to make sure that all schools have measures in place to prevent and tackle bullying and show they are taking it seriously."
