More calls to ChildLine are about bullying than any other issue. And nearly half of pupils who skip school do so because of bullying. Hugh Perry finds out what is being done about it.

What do Tom Cruise, Kate Winslet and Gareth Gates have in common? Like many, they were bullied at school.

Targets of bullying are often those who do not conform; young people who are above or below average ability, have a slightly different appearance or behave differently. It can be as petty as not wearing the right trainers. But individuals from every stratum of society and social situation can become targets. Bullying can take a verbal or physical form, and it is difficult to tell which can be more harmful.

Bullying is partly responsible for social exclusion, and bullies are often socially excluded themselves.
