Researchers for the London Borough of Lambeth looked at school life for Somali children in the capital, focusing on successful approaches at 10 schools with a high number of Somali children.
Common features at these schools included staff taking the lead in supporting Somali children. This helped to involve families in school life and the adoption of innovative teaching styles, such as recruiting pupils with English as a first language as "talk partners" for Somali children.
Other successful approaches included recruiting Somali-speaking teachers and staging cultural awareness events, such as Somali Independence Day. Engaging parents was also crucial, especially as education was found to be valued so highly by parents interviewed by researchers.
