Project: R Lives Campaign.
Funding: £12,000 from Haringey Youth Opportunity Fund and Connexions
Aim: To raise awareness about gun and knife crime
The R Lives Campaign ran over four months at the end of 2007 and beginning of 2008 and worked with young people who live in Hackney, east London. The aim was to develop an understanding of youth culture in the area and raise awareness about gun and knife crime.
It was run by community-based project Leaders in Training, which encourages the ability and talents of young people for their future in education or employment in the Hackney area.
To kick-start the project 30 young people, most of whom were at risk of exclusion from school, were taken on a residential. The idea was to give an insight into the reasons why some young people fall into the trap of getting into gun and knife crime and drop out of school. It also gave the young people the chance to open up and discuss issues that most affected them.
