Goals: To stop young people from becoming involved in car crime by informing them about the consequences of their actions.
Funding: Receives 10,000 from Connexions Oldham and further funding from Oldham Youth Offending Team.
The Smart Wheelz Project was first set up in the summer of 2001, after Oldham-based youth agency Smart noticed that a significant number of crimes committed by young people in the area were vehicle-related.
The organisation devised an initial six-week scheme to be run over the school holidays for young people who had either been involved in or were at risk of getting involved in vehicle crime. Muriel Taylor, manager of the Smart Wheelz Project, says local agencies were then asked to nominate potential referrals and a handful of candidates were put forward. "At first the course was going to be a one-off, but it proved such a hit that we decided to seek accreditation for it," says Taylor. "Since then we've condensed it and made it available to more young people in the area."
