Positive images: South Tyneside sets up youth magazine

1 min read

The magazine, called SMUTY (Something More Useful to You), is part of the Street Sound project run by Stride - an organisation set up to further community participation in the regeneration of Tyneside. The project, designed to get young people involved in the process and develop their skills, has 41,000 from the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund to operate for two years.

The magazine was sparked by a South Tyneside Youth Forum event last year, where young people requested more information about what was happening in their area.

SMUTY was put together by a group of 13- to 16-year-olds who commissioned articles from their peers and reported on initiatives they visited, including the launch of Matrix, a drug and alcohol support project for young people, and the borough's youth strategy consultation event.
