Politics: Cameron supports Sure Start principle

The man who is rapidly emerging as the front-runner for the leadership of the Conservative party has told Children Now that he is committed to the Sure Start programme.

Shadow education secretary David Cameron said he backed the schemedespite the recent leaked report which showed that children in SureStart areas have not fared any better than those in equivalent areaswithout it (Children Now, 14-20 September).

Speaking at the Conservative party conference in Blackpool last week,Cameron said: "I very much support the principle of Sure Start, eventhough its initial impact has proved disappointing."

However, Cameron declined to comment on extended schools.
