Tory government Sure Start worry

Early Years
The chief executive of Barnardo's has voiced fears over the Conservative Party's commitment to Sure Start.

Speaking at a fringe event at last week's Conservative conference, Martin Narey said: "If there's one thing that worries me about a Tory government it's whether we can be confident about the continued funding of Sure Start."

He added the programme had a "quite breathtaking effect" on young children and parents.

Although evaluations of Sure Start have shown mixed results, he urged the party not to "lose their nerve" on the programme.

However, in an interview with CYP Now shadow families minister Maria Miller said there was "no way" a Tory government would make cuts to it.
