Policy & Practice: Soapbox - Disabled young people are entitled tohave their say

Barnardo's has more than 50 services in the UK that work with disabled children and young people and their families. These include the provision of early intervention and support, short breaks, play and leisure activities, and support during transition periods and with employment.

Because many disabled children and young people do not communicate through spoken language, the assumption is often made that they have nothing to say, so their wishes and views are then disregarded.

To challenge this, 30 disabled children and young people from Barnardo's services around the UK attended the conference and shared their experiences of social exclusion, and their positive experiences of being engaged in consultation and participation through their local Barnardo's.
