The obvious benefit of Sure Start is countering the outmoded idea that parenting is a purely private matter. The rise of parenting support over recent years is an acknowledgement that all parents need support, especially at times of difficulty.

As the impact of adult depression and poor parenting on children'soutcomes have become apparent, so there is growing recognition of thevalue of early intervention through parenting support.

One example of a comprehensive package offering this kind of support isthe Incredible Years programme. Although it was developed at theUniversity of Washington in the US, it has been adapted for thiscountry. It takes an approach based on the Webster-Strattoncollaborative parent training method. This involves focusing onparenting training, communication skills and training for parentingworkers. The method aims to cultivate better behaviour, friendshipskills, anger management and problem solving skills in children. Becausethe programme includes the child, their parents and teachers, it meetsthe needs of the whole child.
