Policy & Practice: Policy into practice - Confidence with food iskey to healthy eating

1 min read
With ongoing concern over rising levels of child obesity, the need to support children and their parents to make healthy eating choices is an urgent priority. It may be the more extreme cases that hit the headlines, but the fact remains that a quarter of children in this country are overweight or obese with all the dangers of poor health, both now and in the future, that this brings.

Reducing obesity is a key priority for the Government and a target hasbeen set to halt the rise in obesity among children aged under 11 by2010. The Choosing Health white paper sets out how this will be achievedthrough a range of interventions including improved school meals, theHealthy Schools initiative and more physical exercise. Reducing levelsof obesity is also key to many children and young people's plans.

The launch of Let's Get Cooking - a new initiative led by the SchoolsFood Trust as part of its Eat Better Do Better campaign - offers asimple but potentially popular way for children to learn about food.Building on the popularity of TV chefs and cooking programmes, Let's GetCooking supports children and schools to run after-school cookingclasses.
