Policy & Practice: Policy into practice - Pick a camp, pack a bag, see the integration

2 mins read
It has been a favourite with Americans for decades and now it is here - the residential summer camp.

You'd have thought it would have arrived sooner. The camp as a niche for obese children or for young offenders has spun off reasonably quickly.

But as a nation we have spurned sending our children away during the summer, preferring to keep them close, albeit often bored.

Research shows that there is not enough for young people to do in the summer, with a paucity of local provision and few activities (20 per cent of young people don't have enough structured activity in the holidays).

This is where the 12.5m National Lottery funding for the Get REAL (Residential Exciting Active Leisure Time) pilot summer camp programme for 11 to 17 year olds, initiated last year, hopes to fill the gap. Aimed to fit a diverse range of tastes, it's adapting the American summer camp to ensure there is something for everyone.
